My kid got in to both Blair and RM with no prep. In her circle of friends there is one kid who prepped. Not so much just for the tests but did outside classes every year.
Was your child already in a magnet MS program or a W school?
My kid got into both magnets without prep. And without being at a magnet middle school. Don't make your kids prep. It sends them the wrong message. Have them spend their time doing things that are interesting to them. Art, music, time in nature, sports, creative projects (wood-working, machine-building, what have you.) All those things are also good for the brain, and helps develop your kid as a whole person.
My kid did prep and has been in magnet programs throughout. He also does art, music, sports, scholastic competitions, community service, lots of nature projects and outreach. He also plays online video games. Very similar to most of his peers at the magnet programs. I agree - these things are good for the brain and helps to develop the kid as a whole person. One thing that no one talks about here is that you also must have a stable home life for your child and instill good values. Make your child work hard so that do not expect handouts. Do not have a household where abuse, adultery and addiction takes a hold. Associate with good and moral people. Have a solid marriage so that your kid can have a strong support system at home. Do not be frivolous with money and be careful in how you spend. This way you can also give financial security to your child. Don't let the TV and internet be the babysitter. You need to spend quality and quantity time with your child.
