Johnnie Boden is not my friend or acquaintance so I have no problem getting his catalog. When it's someone you know, there's an implicit pressure to buy, and these "parties" take advantage of that. Even if the seller is titally low-key and doesn't push anything, the nature of the relationship makes it awkward. There's no way around it. If you're my friend and you need money just ask and I will help out. But please oh please do not subject me to a sales party!!!
But if you know that going in, then can't you just decline the invite? I try to support my friends just because I like it when they do the same for me, but if I don't want to buy a certain product then I don't go to the party. Now if it's a friend who is constantly pushing a product on you like Mary Kay or something, well, that's different because it's constant, inescapable pressure. But a party? Just say no and go on your merry way. Not everyone gets offended when they get invited -- I actually like some of the parties b/c the products are interesting and you meet new people.
