You can focus on whole food with a keto diet! It is harder if you don't like meat, but the point of it is to eat about 75%fat/20% protein/5% carbs so a ton of fruit doesn't really fit into that. I typically eat eggs with avocado or a coconut milk protein shake for breakfast, for lunch a giant salad with dark leafy greens, cucumbers, grilled chicken thighs, oil/vinegar, maybe some cheese; dinner is anything from a taco salad to cava to broiled salmon with veggie sides. A few nights of week I have a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, berries with whipped cream. It doesn't feel restrictive to me, and I find that eating out and social events are easier than when I was calorie counting. I don't crave sweets or even feel that hungry anymore.
I have heard this, but it felt so restrictive to me. I took my kids apple picking, and couldn’t eat any of the apples or anything we made from them later. I had to come up with all new things to make for family meals where carbs were separated out from the rest of the meal. No more tasting the cookie dough or baking bread with my little girl. It wasn’t a lifestyle that was going to work for me long term. I had to give up too many things that I love. Good things: kids ate ALL of their vegetables every day because they were cooked with salt and healthy fats. I have actually continued adding oil, nuts, and seeds to our veggies. Also, I really never did feel hungry.
