An arrest is simply an officer’s personal opinion that someone has done something wrong. I am surprised that you found that out. Usually arrests do not show up in background checks - Only convictions, mostly felonies. Anyway, I was arrested in ‘04 for DV after getting into a fight w/an ex boyfriend. I was young + stupid and learned a ton from my actions. I work at a public school and it has never shown up in any fingerprint check that has been done. I spent a night in jail, to “cool off,” but was never prosecuted nor convicted. I never even went to court to face a judge. Maybe that is what occurred with this person. Sometimes people are arrested, taken to jail to cool off, then let go and a lesson is learned hopefully!!
Friends of mine got in a huge screaming match (no violence) and neighbors called the cops. Both of them were arrested and spent the night in jail. Neither was guilty of anything except yelling, but this is standard procedure in DC.
I don't care enough about it to double check the veracity of this, but I've been told by an attorney that any time the police are called for a domestic situation in DC they are required to make an arrest, even if it is the neighbors or other non-eyewitnesses making the call. I don't know if he was eventually arrested or not, but a guy I personally witnessed trying to break up a fight on the metro was then accused of starting it by one of the real culprits and it looked like the police planned to arrest both of them. On the other hand, you could be dating a violent guy with a temper. Use your best judgment.
