.....despite the fact that he indicated during the campaign that he would support a ban on sanctuary cities.
... if any were to come up in Virginia, which they haven’t. If that were to occur, then the legislature could address it in a way that was narrowly tailored to the actual problem and wasn’t overly broad or restrictive. When all they’re doing is addressing a non-existent problem in the abstract, veto is appropriate.
Don't be obtuse. Fairfax County is a sanctuary city. And we have the precipitously declining schools and property values, horrible amounts of litter, and MS-13 activity to show for it.
What specific regulations and policies has Fairfax enacted that make it a sanctuary city?
Do you really need to pretend that a fact known for decades doesn't exist? The incidious thing about Sanctuary Cities is that they break the law - it's not that citizens enact laws to create them, it's that they flagrantly *ignore* existing laws, which circumvents citizens. For one, the sheriff of FFx just recently announced she won't be keeping illegal immigrants in jail for ICE to retrieve them. You can argue technicalities all day - this is deliberate and inappropriate.
That announcement in no way violated the law, Fairfax decided to stop participating in a voluntary ICE program that most Virginia localities don’t participate in because it was taking up too many county resources and opening Fairfax up to the risk of lawsuits that ICE wasn’t going to indemnify them for. The bill Northam vetoed would have had zero impact on Fairfax’s decision here.
Illegal immigration violates the law.. Why are you invoking the law? You lose.
Then ICE can come pick people up from Fairfax in a timely manner rather than taking their dear sweet time and expecting Fairfax to use its tax revenue to feed and house them for additional days and defend the occasional unlawful detainer action when someone is misidentified. Fairfax will still notify ICE that they have someone who appears to be undocumented, ICE just needs to be more diligent about doing its job.
Sure, I'm sure that's it and not at all what Democrats seek and indeed, ADMIT to doing, which is to aid and abet illegal immigrants in their quest to stay in the US. I'm sure that's not it at all. WHY you would seek to destroy your own community? Do you realize how crowded and unsustainable this country would become if we allowed every foreign national the opportunity to come here and stay at their whim?
