In MD, you can get a same day, certified copy at most health departments, or at the vital records office in Baltimore. We had the same issue with a last min trip and our infant didn't have his passport yet. I got a passport appointment (because travel was within 2 weeks) and went to get a certified copy of his birth certificate because I didn't want to send away the original (I was paranoid). We waited all day for the passport appointment and then came back 3 days later to pick it up. [/quote]
