The BLPC was charged with making Reed a neighborhood school b/c the seats are needed there. As pointed out by one of the APS planners, ATS and Reed aren't far apart and to put two options schools that close together would leave several neighborhoods without an actual neighborhood school despite having the density to fill one. I don't know what the right answer is for Tuckahoe (who is obviously getting up in arms about this despite nothing from APS about changing their school), but I do know it would be incredibly foolish to place a non-neighborhood school in such a dense location.
From this perspective it's not the best choice. But I don't think relocating a choice program to Tuckahoe is a great idea either, for cost or the success of current option programs. If only they'd built out at Reed instead of putting an addition on McKinley. I mean, I hope they're at least learning a lesson from this and tracking where young families are buying houses right now so that this doesn't sneak up on them again. Oh well. I just want them to evaluate this situation from every perspective before making a decision that can't be undone. Does it make sense from multiple angles?
