Cafe Bonaroti in Vienna is close to McLean, old school Italian with very good service.......don't expect cutting edge, however..... http://www.bonarotirestaurant.com/
You can stay in McLean for Italian. Authentic and expensive: Assagi Osteria; Traditional red sauce family restaurant and money left over: Pulcinella.
Assagi Osteria is NOT expensive. I agreed with the OP. I wouldn't go to tyson corner, too crowd and food is not that good either. I guess since OP lives in Mclean so the couple is not poor. You definitely need to check out this place L'Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls. I've been there 8 times in the past 10 years. My wife and I went there for dinner and the bill is usually around $400 for a couple with some wine.
