It is funny that every year some one will think of reasons why their specific situation means the teacher may want something more than a gift card. inevitably, some long-term teacher will remind them that teachers really like those generic gift cards. No need to think on this anyone, people. Just buy those cards.
The only reason to deviate from a gift card, is if you know of a specific interest or avocation of that person and get them something pertaining to that. Getting a personalized gift is a decent reason to deviate from the above. Getting a generic gift is not. However, if you do get them a personalized gift, get a gift receipt so that they can exchange it if/when they already have or don't need what you gifted them.
Or, if you feel like a gift card alone is too impersonal, you can do the gift card plus a small token item. The gesture of a small token is nice, and then the teacher gets the value of the gift card to get whatever he/she wants to. Teacher here, and this year I got a group gift of a visa gift card, along with a box of candy and a plant. That was nice. Candy and plant were inexpensive, so most of gift value went into gift card, which is the right balance. Alternately, the token could be some baked good, which has the advantage of being consumable and not a clutter item like a mug.
