The only reason to deviate from a gift card, is if you know of a specific interest or avocation of that person and get them something pertaining to that. Getting a personalized gift is a decent reason to deviate from the above. Getting a generic gift is not.
However, if you do get them a personalized gift, get a gift receipt so that they can exchange it if/when they already have or don't need what you gifted them.
