I grew up in Old Greenwich Ct. Its near the beach, has a small town feel but is wealthy and is about 35 mins to Grand Central station. Variations on that include Riverside, Cos Cob and Greenwich (slightly more urban but not really). I agree I would NEVER want to live in New Jersey. Growing up we accidentally went over there once on the wrong bridge into Manhattan and that was enough for me...
Actual current metro area resident calling bullshit on 35 mins to old greenwich/Greenwich. It's an hour on metro north - all my coworkers complain about it constantly. Alternately, I'm on the Hudson line and the trains are much less crowded and real estate less expensive. I would look at the Lower/mid Hudson valley, OP. If you don't need to be in the city on weekdays, then just get north of the westchester border if you want to have significantly lower taxes but stil 60-80 minute train ride. River towns if you want it to be 50 mins or less.
