I live in Montclair NJ and love it. And shockingly, I'm not trashy. Very comfortable life in a cute, diverse community. My cost of living is less than when I lived in DC (Petworth).

i live in Darien and it takes about an hour to get to grand central. The pp is correct that the town lacks diversity. Still, i think it's a lovely town.

it takes longer from new canaan or westport. (new canaan you have to switch trains)

It takes less time to grand central from greenwich. Also, note there are several stops in greenwich so depending on which stop you get on will affect travel time

also note that some trains take less time because they make less stops! you just have to check the schedules

I grew up in Huntington.
It was easy to catch the LIRR and go into the city for weekend stuff, going out at night.

Check Mt. Vernon and New Rochelle. Great value in Westchester!

I agree I would NEVER want to live in New Jersey. Growing up we accidentally went over there once on the wrong bridge into Manhattan and that was enough for me...


Actual current metro area resident calling bullshit on 35 mins to old greenwich/Greenwich. It's an hour on metro north - all my coworkers complain about it constantly. Alternately, I'm on the Hudson line and the trains are much less crowded and real estate less expensive.

I would look at the Lower/mid Hudson valley, OP. If you don't need to be in the city on weekdays, then just get north of the westchester border if you want to have significantly lower taxes but stil 60-80 minute train ride. River towns if you want it to be 50 mins or less.

I just moved to Darien, CT and i love it so far (I've only been here a month)

I was also going to recommend Darien, CT. I have friends who live there, and their neighborhood is adorable. Both parents commute to the city.

Have you considered living in 1 of the outer boroughs specifically Brooklyn. Williamsburg, Brooklyn heights, park slope are just a few train stops from the city.
