DC needs to eliminate the reversible lane on Connecticut Avenue. Consider all of the effort that the US Park Police put into reversing Rock Creek Parkway, including putting up barriers twice per day and 'sweeping' the lanes before reversing them. DC police don't even like to make traffic stops. Unless there were clear signage, ideally red and green led lights embedded in the pavement and DC police and traffic wardens managing the lanes, they should be eliminated as a head-on crash waiting to happen.
Show me data that says any more accidents happen on Conn at rush hour than at other times.
I'm the OP and this is not scientific at all, but ALL of the accident I mentioned happened during rush hour because people were trying to turn left from the wrong lane. Again, I am not a proponent of shutting the lane switching down during rush hour off. I think it really moves the commuters faster in and out of town. I am simply saying alerting the drivers better is much needed. There are virtually no accidents of this sort during non rush hour because people are turning from the proper lane and because there is simply less trafic. I don't understand why anyone would be against such a fairly inexpensive yet hugely beneficial safetly feature.
I have seen quite a few just from this. I live right near Brandywine and Connecticut so go across and up and down Connecticut at all hours. I know very well what the times are but if I'm picking the kids up late from school or it's the tail end of morning I sometimes forget. There are NOT enough signs - I"ve looked for them. Basically, I study the traffic patterns. Which is annoying. But, I think we should keep it as there are already so many commuting hardships esp. with Rock Creek Parkway all hosed up. Just label it better. In an aesthetically pleasing way.
