We moved from DC ("upper NW") because we found a great house in town that was a tremendous value ("a bigger place for our stuff"). And as for the quality life over there, well it depends on how you define quality. Our quality of life was worse the other side of the river. :( This was not a snap judgment with extended family in MD. We made the decision to move with our eyes wide open about commute times, other choices... I like that we can go to the Saturday farmers market and run into our neighbors, have the mayor great us by name, go to a free concert on the green, a great high end restaurant (that welcomes and does look sideways at kids), at bunch of neighborhood family restaurants, the Vienna Inn, instanteous police response and traffic enforcement, streets that were plowed multiple times in the snow, combination of sales, income and real estate taxes about the same - net, you don't have to wonder what the h@#$ the central office and the Rheeidiot is doing to your school, Halloween parade, town staff that you can talk to...in person...who can make decisions, Viva Vienna, frozen custard...mmmm, we know and talk to all the neighbors on our block, youth sports leagues and community center programs. :D As far as commute time to downtown comparing home values to distance / time from downtown to Vienna, isn't really any worse than high end suburban towns in major metro areas. For my route it is 45-50 minutes to 14/K leaving at 7:15am same on return at 4:30pm, but your have to hit your time points right on, not earlier or later.
New poster here. I appreciated your post, but you lost me with "Rheeidiot" and leaving work at 4:30 p.m. What professional leaves work at 4 p.m.?
