Some professionals do leave at 4:30. Usually those who have chosen to leave soul-sucking downtown jobs so that they can pick up the kids at a decent hour, cook a healthy dinner, and have some family time in the evenings. Those professionals often also arrive at the office at 6:30/7. Six-figure government jobs, baby. Don't knock it 'til you try it.

My point which was not well received was that if you work in DC spending 2 plus hrs driving to and from such a drab place must be soul sucking. I would rather reverse commute if I worked out there than have to move there. That is something to think about. The quality of life in the upper NW/BCC neighborhoods is very high. I don't see how pointing out those facts makes me snooty. Now my aging neighbor who only goes to Va to fly out of Dulles to go to Paris on the other hand...she is the embodiment of DC snob.

You are assuming that the OP (and all of us suburbanites??) commute to DC. There are a ton of places to work around here, not just downtown - there's Tysons, Dulles, Reston, and, yes, some of us (like me) reverse commute up to the nerdy BioScience Corridor in MD.

Ones that make the most of their day

or value being home for dinner with their family

or stay until 6:30pm on sports nights

or take work home to do after the kids are in bed.

[at little bitchy this evening aren't we... ]

I guess some professionals value coming home early and spacious living.

I like that we can go to the Saturday farmers market and run into our neighbors, have the mayor great us by name, go to a free concert on the green, a great high end restaurant (that welcomes and does look sideways at kids), at bunch of neighborhood family restaurants, the Vienna Inn, instanteous police response and traffic enforcement, streets that were plowed multiple times in the snow, combination of sales, income and real estate taxes about the same - net, you don't have to wonder what the h@#$ the central office and the Rheeidiot is doing to your school, Halloween parade, town staff that you can talk to...in person...who can make decisions, Viva Vienna, frozen custard...mmmm, we know and talk to all the neighbors on our block, youth sports leagues and community center programs.

As far as commute time to downtown comparing home values to distance / time from downtown to Vienna, isn't really any worse than high end suburban towns in major metro areas. For my route it is 45-50 minutes to 14/K leaving at 7:15am same on return at 4:30pm, but your have to hit your time points right on, not earlier or later.

New poster here. I appreciated your post, but you lost me with "Rheeidiot" and leaving work at 4:30 p.m. What professional leaves work at 4 p.m.?

The kind that can only afford to live in Vienna.

Sorry ladies didn't mean to barge in to your small town party. I didn't even notice that this was posted in the Va schools section.

Well, now you know it's the VA Public Schools forum, yet here you are again, touting Chevy Chase. The question was "what's so great about Vienna?" not "tell me about someplace 20 miles away that you think is better."

Not everyone thinks that urban living is better than living in the suburbs - I can't for the life of me understand why the DC residents on these forums feel the need to bash the suburbs all the time. Why do you care so much that some people prefer suburban living? I don't care that you prefer living in the city.

We owned a house in upper NW for several years and I didn't think the quality of life was so high. Our house had no driveway or garage, and I had to take my 2 babies to that tiny Safeway near CC Circle (you know, the one where you can never get a parking spot and the carts barely fit down the aisles) and then come home and look for street parking and try to get my little ones and groceries into the house. I wouldn't have dreamed of sending my kids to public school there. The city services sucked - every time I called them for a problem, I got no help or response. The neighbors weren't friendly.

Moving to Vienna was the best decision we ever made for our family. Wild horses couldn't drag me back to upper NW, so you are welcome to it!

And really, you don't see how writing "Eww. Vienna? Suburbs really suck." makes you come across as snooty? Seriously, you were just pointing out the facts?

I live in Vienna and I get what alot of other posters are saying about the community - though I would add that this is really applicable if you live within the town limits of Vienna. If you happen to live in 22182, still a Vienna address, but closer to Wolf trap, Meadowlark gardens, etc. you definitely don't have the town feeling and need to drive to the shops, grocery stores, etc. On average home prices are a bit/slightly more reasonable than mclean - and you'll find all sorts of folks in Vienna just as you would anywhere. I read the posting of how snobby mclean I and in my 10 years here, I have run into that attitude in our little town as well. Elementary and middles schools are really wonderful - just as you would expect to in any well-to-do suburban area. Commute times to DC, as others have very rightly said, are atrocious and that to me is the one major bummer of Vienna. On the other hand, nothing beats the VI on Friday afternoons !!!

Ew. Vienna? Suburbs really suck. Give me upper NW or Bethesda/CC at the furthest but if you work in DC why oh why would you want to live out there? Character is as bland as day old beer.

And you are trolling the VA Public Schools forum because ... ? Go away!

We love Vienna for the small-town community feel. It is pretty commutable to almost every portion of the region - DC, Loudoun, Arlington, and Montgomery County. Most of the town is walkable or bikable. There are great amenities such as the community center, parks, and the W&OD Trail. The schools are ranked highly. The houses span all prices ranges from starters to million-dollar homes. People are mostly friendly. It is a great place to live!
