I don't understand why this is controversial. He uses every legal method to decrease his tax liability even if it means paying no taxes.

I do the very same thing - obviously not in the same income league but I also pay very little in taxes though my income is substantial. I have the benefit of an excellent tax accountant and tax lawyer.

Even if he did, you wouldn't know.  To know that, he would have to release reams of underlying transactional data as well.
