I can’t believe his lawyer didn’t advise him to try and seek a plea deal. The Feds have a very high conviction rate in general and I’m sure they will be crossing all their ts and dotting their is in something this high profile. I guess a lifetime of doing this and getting away with it has made him falsely confident he’ll get another slap on the wrist.
From what I understand, a plea deal was offered and he declined it.
I said this upthread, but there are good reasons for him to go to trial, even if the evidence is as bad as it sounds for him. Juries can be a crapshoot. It only takes one crackpot juror to dig in their heels for some reason and refuse to convict. When I lived in Houston in the '90's my friend's ex-boyfriend was robbed of his wallet, shot, and killed. He was a County prosecutor. He was also Jewish. One juror refused to convict because the victim was Jewish. It was a shocking story. The defendant was re-tried and convicted the second time. Or something crazy happens at trial and you get a mistrial. Or something crazy happens and you have grounds for an appeal. You take a plea and you cut off all of those possibilities. And all the while you are tying up the prosecutors with re-trials, appeals, etc., you can ask for a plea deal again.
