I recently saw the GDS rowing team practicing and several were wearing Harvard gear, so I assume that several team members will attend Harvard or have older siblings there.
Or have parents who went there. Or boy/girlfriends. Or rowed in the Head of the Charles and bought souvenirs.
Or have even been to Boston at some point in time in their lives. Harvard duality: part university, part tourist attraction.
+1. I know sophomore and junior kids (i.e. not accepted yet) at public and private schools who wear Harvard sweatshirts. And Tufts and Columbia and NYU sweatshirts. Whether it's a private or public high school, often there's an older sibling at one of these colleges. (For some reason, it's called "repping" your sibling's college. Don't ask me why. DC, a junior, "reps" older DC's college by wearing the sweatshirt.) In one case the girl is a sophomore who wants to go to Harvard. The point is, anybody with $40 can buy a Harvard sweatshirt.
