Eventually the more pragmatic middle is found. Education really should not be politicized at all. The states and teachers should be free (within some broader guidelines that are not attached to punitive tests that suck the life out of people) to do what is best for their particular students (regardless of what someone writes in one book about the "future". There are many books that argue differently). There are people who want the DOE to go away and people who want the DOE to get more involved. The middle is out there.
