[twitter]

I am Jewish and fearful of the growing antisemitism in the US and Europe especially. The NYT article was painful to read as I've always loved the NYT -- https://www.wsj.com/opinion/free-expression/kristofs-unbelievable-tale-d9d7b6ff -- I am not only afraid for my Jewish children and neighbors, but because I know what comes next. When we, as a society, pool an entire group of people as one issue, it doesn't stop with Jews -- that's just the place it starts. How can, after decades of fighting discrimination and stereotyping, have the NYT -- a well-respected paper -- write something so hateful without investigating and learning and visiting? Where is it safe to be Jewish? Is Israel the only place? First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Yup, as the racists in these comments prove, hate and weaponized ignorance are on the rise against Jews, women, and other traditional scapegoats. The irony is that in the long-term this bigotry creates more Zionists. Lean into community, have frank discussions with your kids about these and other dark times in Jewish/American history, bear witness and hold the bigots accountable, that’s all you can do, really.
There will always be many more people who are not Zionists than actual Zionists in the world. Zionists are not welcome in many parts of the world now. But continue to wallow in your victim hood - no one cares!
Amen. I'm so tired of these people and their faux victimhood.
+1. It is long past time for some introspection about why there is dislike of the behavior of a certain group of people.
Which group do you mean, specifically?
anyone with behavior that harms another human being in any way. You do the math.
There are pros and cons of all cults/religions. It’s the tunnel vision, forced or voluntary conformity, irrational groupthink mentality. It’s the learned superiority, fear, and/or skepticism and fear again of individuals outside of the group. Lots and lots of unsubstantiated fear of outsiders. It happens in most or every religion to some extent. Rather than focus on what makes all humans alike and try to bridge the gap, religions only seem to obsess with differences, keeping individuals closed in and away from perceived ‘dangerous’ outside forces. It happens in all religions. Go to Utah and see how insane Mormons are, or Evangelicals or Jehovah’s Witnesses. It’s insanity and it is noteworthy how some religions and cults are freely open to criticism while to criticize and point out faults with others is strictly forbidden.
