It has to do with the % of TSA agents calling out at those airports. DCA and IAD have not had the call-outs that BWI has had.
This is obvious. The question is why?
I've read (probably on DCUM) that IAD and DCA TSA are privately contracted and funded so they're being paid - no idea if it's true.
I don’t think that’s true. Dulles and DCA aren’t listed as airports that use private contractors. I think it has more to do with BWI TSA staff pulling more from the Baltimore area, while staff for IAD/DCA pull more from the DC/NoVa region where they have a higher tolerance for federal government shenanigans.
That's my theory too, that the workers at DCA and IAD are just like "here we go again" and hope they'll get a bonus for not calling out. I fully support TSA workers for calling out, FWIW, it's completely ridiculous to expect employees to go without paychecks multiple times in less than a year (or ever). Maybe they need to go drive Uber or do some other gig work to earn money and I don't begrudge them that at all.
I do not begrudge anyone needing to earn money and calling out. But that still doesn’t explain why the BWI workers would call out at a significantly higher rate. It’s not even close. Is it that they are more financially strapped than the DC TSA? Or they are better at pre planned collective action? I hope NYT does an in depth post mortem. I love those.
On the news they said 38% of TSA at BWI had called out. One of the highest rates in the country. I’m seeing an 18% callout rate for DCA and nothing for IAD. The national callout rate is about 11% so DCA is still quite high for call outs. I think since DCA is largely a “commuter” airport it has more seasoned travelers who can efficiently pass through a line.
Pretty much everyone we spoke to in the 4 hour BWI line on Saturday seemed to be a “seasoned traveler” with PreCheck and/or Clear.
