DC resident who grew up in NoVa here. On driving, Maryland and Virginia drivers are bred to hate eachother. Just one example: Maryland drivers expect you to move over if you're both driving in the left lane and they are overtaking you. Virginia drivers expect you to go around if you're in such a hurry. Neither approach is better than the other, but they clash, so a Virginia driver in the left lane driving 70 thinks the Maryland guy behind him going 80 is an idiot for flashing his lights like a maniac when the middle lane is wide open. And when the positions are reversed, the Virginia guy wonders why the hell the Maryland guy is slowly moving over to block the Virginia guy from passing on the right. Maryland drivers think VA has bad signage, while Virginia drivers hate 270 because WTH is with all these exits inside of exits and having to get on to some access road 4 miles before your exit or else you miss it?
Virginia state law requires that drivers in the left lane to cede to faster drivers. This is not about driving habits; it is about the legal requirements applicable to driving: http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-804
LOL are you seriously attempting to argue that Maryland drivers are right about this because of what Virginia law says? We aren't talking about whether the person deserves a ticket or not. In most cases both drivers are speeding an deserve a ticket. We're talking about why DC and MD drivers hate each other. 95 is two lanes for long stretches in Virginia, as is 66 west of Manassas. With heavy traffic, Virginia drivers have learned to weave in and out of traffic if they expect to get anywhere. Maryland's portion of 95 and 270 have bazillians of lanes so they have the luxury of waiting around until someone decides to move over. So both sets of drivers developed expectations about how others will act, and they get pissed off when people don't meet their expectations.
