GOP leaders say they won't put reins on Trump and Musk in shutdown negotiations https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/02/26/congress/gop-leader-shutdown-talks-musk-trump-00206198
The GOP is laughable. “The Republicans have been in good faith on negotiations on the funding issues all along, and the Democrats have had completely unreasonable conditions assigned to this," Johnson said. "They want us to limit the power of the executive branch. They want us to stipulate in the appropriations bills, for the first time in history, that certain agencies in the executive branch would have to have a specific number of employees — all sorts of just unreasonable, what I think are unconstitutional, demands. There'll be a violation of separation of powers. So we're pretty far apart right now, but it is not because the Republicans. It's because of the Democrats.“
On the positive side, the Democrats are demanding the right things and they have leverage.
What leverage? The GOP is voting in lockstep.
They got an outline of a bill through. One that would likely cause 25-30 centrists Rs to lose their seats over Medicare cuts. The Rs never vote in lockstep on anything substantive. Which is why Johnson has never passed a budget bill without relying on a MAJORITY of Dems to vote for it. The GOP is herding cats. Massive is out. They have zero votes to lose and the Freedom caucus to placate with decimating Medicaid while promising their 25-30 centerists they won’t decimate Medicaid and lose the House. And budget hawks being asked to vote for a bill that gives away 4T in tax cuts to oligarchs. No, the GOP will not be voting in lockstep. It will be a sh*tshow, like… remember that time all business in Congress stopped because it took them 3 weeks to vote on a Speaker. It will be that. Except then they had 7-8 votes to spare. Here they can afford one defection. And one defection has already come forward. So they are depending on the Freedom Caucus and the purple district moderate to both vote on a wildly unpopular bill that guts Medicaid and explodes the deficit they have made their primary message to give tax cuts to billionaires, but not eliminate taxes on tips, social security, etc. And then there are the showboat wildcards like Bobert and MTG they cannot lose who will pull outrageous stunts that make everything worse. And we have yet to discuss the Senate. Unless this goes through reconciliation, they need 60 votes. But sure… lockstep. Pops popcorn. Figures 3/14 is as good a time as any to polish off the resume, update linked in and start the process of extracting herself from Elon destroying her agency. Also— Shut it all down. You are only essential if there is a clear threat of civilian death if you aren’t doing your job. Guard nukes. Minimally staff the ICU at VA hospitals o people whose medical care is life threatening. And that’s it. No social security checks. No Medicare o Medicaid reimbursements. No emergency passports. No HUD loans closing. No public park building or memorial open to the public in any capacity unless you are visiting you spouse who is in the VA ICU. No ICE. No CBP. No TSA. No FAA. Elon wants to lime ate government? We’ve had too many “shutdowns” that kept things American people would miss running. Shut it all down. Then people can decide if Elons plan is a solid one.
Everything, everything written here. I hope the government shuts down for six months. I hope MAGA gets everything it voted for. This is not my lesson to learn!
Yessss
