Part of me wonders if the reasons the Republicans are so hyperbolic about the election is because they really were caught by such surprise. Most of the Republicans I know were absolutely and totally CONVINCED Romney would win. They really seemed to have no idea what was coming. The shock just took them to a really angry place.
I think this is right. It's similar to 2004 Kerry v. Bush, when democrats had much the same reaction. Part of it is they (we) really thought Kerry woudl win, but an equal or bigger part of it was that it was just inconceivable that anyone would vote for Bush - again - with so much evidence on the table that his first term was a catastrophe. Who could be that ill-informed? Republicans today feel much the same way - they truly don't understand how any sane person could prefer Obama to ANYONE, even a candidate as flawed as Romney. That, combined with the surprise caused by self-delusion that Romney would win (note - when every non-partisan polling organization has your guy losing, you should moderate your expectations) causes the vitriol. Plus, of course, Obama is a Kenyan socialist muslim bent on requiring that one out of every three pregnancies is aborted and 1 out of every 4 male children is forced into a gay marriage. Everyone knows that.
