What republicans are against is expanding centralized government and a dependent citizenry . Its dangerous and anti American . Centralized power is always corrupting, no human has the morality to run it.

^^^^^ the economy is bad but not bad enough to fire the first black president. The shitstorms that are going to occur in the near future are going to change life as we know it.... And the political environment as well. Everybody with a brain is worried.

I think this is right. It's similar to 2004 Kerry v. Bush, when democrats had much the same reaction. Part of it is they (we) really thought Kerry woudl win, but an equal or bigger part of it was that it was just inconceivable that anyone would vote for Bush - again - with so much evidence on the table that his first term was a catastrophe. Who could be that ill-informed?

Republicans today feel much the same way - they truly don't understand how any sane person could prefer Obama to ANYONE, even a candidate as flawed as Romney. That, combined with the surprise caused by self-delusion that Romney would win (note - when every non-partisan polling organization has your guy losing, you should moderate your expectations) causes the vitriol. Plus, of course, Obama is a Kenyan socialist muslim bent on requiring that one out of every three pregnancies is aborted and 1 out of every 4 male children is forced into a gay marriage. Everyone knows that.

Don't forget the mandatory burquas and prayer rugs coming to your doorstep on the back of a govt truck soon.

But seriously,

I don't understand why Republicans are so terrified. We got through the last four years in decent shape. The world didn't end and we're all not muslims. The economy is doing better.

Are they really so terrified of tax increases and requiring poor people to pay for medical insurance? Because that's what the Obamacare tax is - forcing people who formerly were freeloaders to actually start paying for medical insrance (unless below the poverty line).

It's only money, people. It's not like Obama is going around the globe attempting to start WWIII with false claims of WMDs.

How were the Dems ever going to overcome the Republican coalition juggernaut of chamber of commerce types, evangelical Christians, and their genius Rove creating just the right wedge issues to get out their vote? Guess what, in two years the Dems retook the House and Senate in a fairly decisive manner. Elections are a snap shot in time and a lot can change in short order.

This is true; however:

Rove/GWB DID create the right wedge issues and coalition. Subsequent republican nominees threw that away, especially with by back giving all the ground they'd gained with Latino voters. Which leads me to my second point:

Brilliant strategies are great, but incompetent opponents are better.

The R poster is full of it. She/he is not laying off anyone unless it makes them more money and they would do that regardless of who won. I suggest that anyone who agrees with that poster follow John Galt's lead and leave.

I have been wondering how they could have missed it as the news I was hearing all along was that the race was neck-and-neck, and if you believed Nate Silver (which it turns out we should have) then it was Obama. Whichever candidate you preferred, it just makes no sense that it should be a surprise that Obama would win under those circumstances. So why the total surprise? I hypothesize that a lot of Republicans listen to editorialized news without realizing it or perhaps without contextualizing what they are hearing and then they pass that information between them as if it were real. Maybe there is a situation here where opinion and fact are getting confused.

I agree with this point. I think many Republicans (certainly not all, but a lot of them) have bought into the belief that the "lame-stream media" won't give them true info, so they get all their news from Fox and similar outlets. As a result, they're in some crazy echo chamber where they don't hear any diversity of opinion. I definitely know several Republicans in that mode.

Not that there aren't policy issues to discuss, but the overheated rhetoric here? Sheesh.

I am also stopping all charitable giving..we are going to save that our money for our family and frankly the thank you I have gotten for giving so much has been electing Obama again. Yes, please, stop your charitable giving, you'll need the money to pay your taxes.

I am a grown up and I am responsible ..that's why I will respond accordingly. First charity hit will be school auction..last year we spent a ton of money to help benefit financial aid..all those folks clearly voted to raise my taxes..so I am not going to be helping there. Also won't be giving to annual fund..schools will have to find money elsewhere..we pay full tuition so I think that will be enough. Always happy to volunteer and will continue but no money..and no money to church..again they supported Obama. As for businesses ..if you are openly and vocally supporting..I will respond..just like the libs respond to things they don't like. I don't think I am the only person who feels this way.

Your posts make me feel very good about your paying a lot more in taxes. Thanks!

This. What a petty person Marie Antoinetee is.
Marie, I make over six figures so I pay a lot in taxes. I think it's my civic duty. But I didn't really vote in this election because of taxes. I voted on social issues. Want to "take back" YOUR country? Get the Rapepublicans to leave women and minorities the hell alone. Show the unwashed masses how the R party works for THEIR benefit (i.e. low taxes). Get an electroshock collar for your candidates so that when they start to opine about rape, they suddenly fall to the floor, unable to speak.

What kind of family business do you have? I want to make sure to avoid it.

Not the poster, but the guillotine? For having a different point of view? So it begins. Animal Farm.

Oy vey. My kids go to public schools, so it looks like our family wouldn't benefit from your 'charitable giving' either way. In the meantime, as PP has noted, additional taxes on the likes of you would benefit everyone.

You are not a grown up. You are a spiteful, nasty adolescent bitch. Your tuition to your fucking private school doesn't cover the full cost of your child's education. And heaven fucking forbid those financial aid famies have different political views than yours, or that your kids should attend a school with kids from different socioeconomic classes, races or ethnicities, which is what donations and financial aid allows. You deserve the guillotine Marie Antoinette. Grow the fuck up.

Amazing. You guys win a bitterly-contested election and already with the talk of the guillotine. Telling about where your heart is, although fortunately that is a long way off.
