The lead has become the un-important foundation, and the producers use the footage of the contestants (picking and choosing just 1% of all that they filmed) to "create" the image and story line that they want for each contestant. The "lead" is just there to give the contestants something to fight about or focus their energies on. So, I guess in that framework, Joan is as good as anyone else. She just needs to be pretty enough to catch the contestants' interest. The competition format of the show will take care of the the rest (i.e. creating an environment for drama). [/quote]
