I don't think she's the prettiest at all. She looks like a typical plastic surgeried real housewife. She would look a million times better if she left her poor face alone and cut her hair, which makes her long, thin face look even longer. And maybe went with a less harsh blonde tone. She does look amazing in clothes though. Otherwise Faith, Edith, and Leslie are much prettier and more natural looking. I'm bummed one of them wasn't selected.
I think they had to consider the dating pool/location after the Gerry/Theresa moving issue: That ruled rural Faith out, which is too bad because it would have been more fun with her. And then Leslie I think was seen as too emotional and risky. Joan seems nice enough, but to me she is really difficult to look at, grotesque and masculine with the face lift and extreme thin body.
The location issue makes sense. I actually think the bigger issues is that both Leslie and Faith are a little too sensitive and fragile for the GB gig. Watching their responses to the Gerry breakup was painful, very similar in the degree of heartbreak that developed in response to such a short relationship. Although I'd prefer either of them, this is probably for the best. Joan seems to have a tougher core. I agree with a PP she's the least likely to get engaged though. And is a little dull.
A lot dull. And to the extent she tries to be contemporary and current, it just comes off as acting and uncomfortable. I hope Joan can find a way to embrace herself and let her freak flag fly.

I don't think the producers are going for fantastic charisma in a bachelor or bachelorette. They're looking for the contestants to provide the drama.

I think she'll probably be more reserved and sensible than a Faith or Leslie (look how they fell for Gerry's malarkey), but how does that make for good tv? I'd peg her as the least likely in all the possibilities discussed to leave engaged.
It's the work. She's pulled too tight, tries to overcompensate with over-emoting then just looks odd.
The producers will work with her on this. Guarantee she'll look a hundred times better with their coaching, plus great makeup, styling, and lighting.

+1 men aren’t attentive and critical the way women are. They see thin+blonde=good.

I agree that she is very statuesque and pretty for her age in pictures. But, in live action, she just didn't have much charisma. I do recall that her ONE memorable moment was her poem. She knocked that out of the park. But, the lack of facial expressions is going to be very hard on the audience. Maybe it's good for the show b/c she has the ultimate "poker face!"
I think we can conclude that the producers wanted to put the name/image of the Golden Bachelorette out there, and they wanted a very traditional "looker" to gin up more men who would be willing to "chase" her. The producers must be counting on men to think with their lower-brain. It's very clique -- which makes it perfectly "Bachelor."
I hope Joan is up to the task... it sounds exhausting.
