in o
For all the people who are frantic about the DC area. Crime has risen everywhere including in conservative states. You cannot outrun the wave of crime that is happening from the pandemic, services and other businesses, employment, schools and all such were affected. While it's unfortunate that carjackings have risen, this is likely making up for the time there were not any during the pandemic. I have faith things will eventually course correct. Things were closed for 2 years, and some places 2.5 years.
It was mostly an overreaction after the death of George Floyd. Reforming and retraining police departments morphed into going easy on urban criminals in the name of “equity.” Crime spiked although it recently has been going down nationally. DC is the exception, and the brazenness and spread of crime to formerly safe neighborhoods suggest that local criminals believe that they will not be caught or held accountable. DC needs an urgent course correction.
We need a working crime lab. We need a tougher USAO who will prosecute. We need less laws like YRA and second look act. We need to arrest and prosecute anyone including teens who car jack people. We need broken windows policing. We need shoplifting taken seriously. Basically, a bit of “everything” is correct. Yes, there are pandemic related effects on crime. Yes, the George Floyd, BLM and even John Legend and Kim Kardashian celebrity led efforts to more broadly implement criminal justice reform have essentially advocated for alternatives to incarceration like restorative justice which I think sends a weak signal about being serious about combating violent crime. Yea, teens know they can steal “free cars” without consequence at present. Yes, speeders know they won’t lose their license because the district will renew licenses even for those with $12k in speeding tickets who went on to smash into and kill three people in Rock Creek park recently. Why can’t we crack down? Why can’t we legalize drugs and use social workers for overdose victims and nonviolent stuff, but actually get real and arrest and strongly prosecute all these violent criminals? Everyone is scared of social justice warriors who might yell at them. Really, we will lose our tax base if crime continues like this.
