We also have a critical shortage of police officers, teachers and medical professionals. The current youth is really interested in work life balance and putting their own mask on first—they just are not looking to these careers that require a lot of self sacrifice. The only answers I see are— 1) significantly raise pay 2) offer citizenship in a change for X years of service 3) increase free student loans/tuition programs 4) institute national mandatory service which could be military, teaching, police, medical, or civilian conservation corp. pick one and give the country at least 2 years of it.
4 all the way! We need a national service requirement for young people between 18-21. Let them choose military or civilian service. Offer some program to tackle climate change preparedness issues and the like. Defer for college if you want but then immediately serve after undergrad. That would give me hope for the future.
Did you serve in the military? How about your kids, if they are old enough? And who is included in these young people? US citizens? What about young people who are not citizens but have lived here for most/all of their life and have benefited from US education, protection, and policies? Should they be required to serve, or do they get a pass?
