BTW, there's also a long history of medical experiments being conducted on soldiers without their knowledge or consent, and that resulted in a lot of distrust between the medical community and the military, along with the marginalized communities that are overrepresented in the military.

We need a national service requirement for young people between 18-21. Let them choose military or civilian service. Offer some program to tackle climate change preparedness issues and the like. Defer for college if you want but then immediately serve after undergrad. That would give me hope for the future.
