According to US News rankings Florida has 10 of the top 100 high schools in the country. As a comparison, Va. has one, DC has one, MD has none.
They are tiny specialty schools of 2-500. Look at overall scores and outcomes.
Most of the schools on that list are smaller. Overall scores and outcomes are generally very good. It's easy to just say Florida schools are crap, but actually they all aren't. Many are very good. Given how much complaining I see on DCUM about Fairfax, Montgomery, and DCPS schools some might think they are crap too. People in FL can also send their kids to private schools if they want while also enjoying a lower housing cost to help them afford it.
In overall stats, Florida ranks 16th. So I agree, not crap. But Virginia is 4th, and NoVA is top in VA. And MD is 10th and MoCo is top in MD. DCPS is of course its own story, but should be compared to FL city schools like Jacksonville, Miami-Dade etc. not state and most people of means who live there go to private. People will complain about their schools because they want it perfect, but people who have moved around know we have it pretty good here.
