He also told his lie to Pence and to the public. It's possible that he was truthful to the FBI but they wrote his words falsely, while saying that he was convincing. That scenario is all pretty convoluted and you're giving Flynn and the FBI way too much credit. The reality is that Flynn is a kook and a liar. And has no honor.
Doesn't matter. He was framed. Talked to a retired career fed prosecutor yesterday. He said that it is almost impossible to reverse a guilty plea--BUT that if there was proof of a "side deal" which was not stated in the plea, then all bets are off. But, he also said, that if a jury were to become involved it would be very hard to get a "guilty" verdict if he pled based on protecting his son. However, there has been a tweet of emails among the Covington lawyers indicating that there was a side deal. If that is true, Sullivan will likely dismiss.
Oh jeez. He lied. And did other stuff so took the plea deal. Side deals, etc. are just noise. And your retired prosecutor friend has lost the plot.
Side deals are not just "noise". They have to be disclosed as part of the plea agreement. If it happened, and wasn't disclosed, that is a big problem. No original 302. Tricked him into the interview by telling him he didn't need counsel at it. Extorted him to plead guilty. This is the third time the judge has had to tell original counsel to give everything to his current counsel. The judge already ordered original counsel to appear before the DC Ethics Counsel because of all this. DOJ withholds exculpatory evidence. It goes on and on. This whole thing stinks.
