The show foundered once they got to Alexandria. The new characters were just not interesting or likeable -Jesse, Deanna, Spencer. The Negan conflict went on too long. Glen Dumpster. I think the problem was Durabont leaving. I think he had the show planned out through Terminus or the Church/Bob's leg (what a moment). It just got too slow after that. I think Andrew Lincoln decided to leave because they killed Carl. I think they killed Merle back when they did because he couldn't get along with Danai Gurirra. When Durabont left, they also decided to kill Andrea, give her storylines to Danai, and Danai wanted the Merle actor gone. I got this from an interview done by Lori Holder plus a video of Dania and the Merle actor at a comic con or something, you can tell she doesn't like him.
Given how Darabont apparently abused the cast, crew and production team (see the emails disclosed in his lawsuit against AMC), I don't blame them for firing him. But either way, I think it's a stretch to give him full credit for storylines through season five given that he was fired while season two was still in production, and given that most of the storylines were adapted from the comic books and were not original material. Andrea was killed because the showrunner after Darabont, Glen Mazzara, decided he wanted a big dramatic end to the season. The sharp departure from the comic book material apparently enraged Robert Kirkman, who is very protective of the source material, and he pushed for Mazzara's ouster (which was already being contemplated because of how Mazzara botched season three production; production had been shut down multiple times because Mazzara struggled with how to develop the story and thus episode scripts couldn't be completed in time for filming). The decision to give Andrea's story arc to Michonne was made after season three was done as part of the post-Mazarra clean-up effort, which was also after Merle had been killed. So I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that Danai Gurira had the clout or the desire to get Michael Rooker fired.
