Not an unreasonable proposal. Would stink for Takoma Park magnet families
Why You can move the entire magnet program from one school building to another and it does not change several things - 1) these kids are highest achievers 2) the parents are committed to and prioritize their kids education 3) they have a decent SES 4) the parents are usually well educated. 5) they are used to travelling long distances for education What do you think will happen to these families? Will their children automatically become low achieving? Or will the families suddenly start spending education money on online gambling and hair extensions?
Most families don't consider magnet programs that are too far (i.e. in time more than miles around DC) away or bad logistics for their family (i.e. bus stop at 6am, returning at 6pm). So of course physically moving one of the main HS magnet programs would affect many families who are in or who even turned down the program. If anything MCPS should be enlarging its CES and magnet offerings given how much the student body had grown in size since originally rolled out decades ago. 160,000 students now and what, 1,200 HS magnet spots only?
