And the standards are pretty decent. Everyone basically is saying that. They might have a quibble here or there, but for the most part the standards in math and language arts are pretty good. Everyone's saying "The devil is in the implementation" i.e. in the locally adopted curriculum. It's true that something that is adopted nationwide will be harder to change once it's "in" the standards. But that 's the whole point of having nation-wide standards. You aren't supposed to be able to change things here and there -- NY changing what it doesn't like, Maine changing what it doesn't like. If you did that, you would not longer have the benefit of things being standard across many states. And that's the whole point of having Common State Standards. It's not supposed to be easy to change them.[/quote]
