I will say as a former Democrat and now independent I modestly conclude that Trump would be a better person in power at this moment. That is all.
Better re-assess. Even his SecDef thought Biden would be better. [twitter]https://twitter.com/UrbanAchievr/status/1496499234786451467?t=6SjUyBeCg0B10Zi9O8aIgg&s=19[/twitter]
This piece peddles the specious claim that Trump wanted to pull out of NATO. He said that the US should leave NATO IF THE OTHER NATO COUNTRIES didn’t contribute their share (2% of GDP is the goal). Trump said the US would no longer foot the bill. And because of Trump, NATO is stronger and other countries have stepped up spending and commitment. This is a fact.
I'm gonna take his own SecDef's opinion over yours, sorry.
Esper has a lot to criticize Trump about, but not NATO. That is not a direct quote from Esper. If you read it carefully it’s trying to convey that Esper said it, but the quotes are attributed to “aides.” If you want to see Trump’s NATO policy in black and white, there are multiple sources including NATO GDP spending by country, and Esper’s own speeches regarding NATO. Here is a direct quote: “China’s militarization of land features in the South China Sea and Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea and incursion into eastern Ukraine demonstrate their brazen attempts to chip away at the autonomy of others and undermine the resilience and cohesion of countries and institutions critical to U.S. security, including NATO… These types of targeted key leader engagements will be essential as we implement the reform plan we announced this summer to reposition our forces in Europe to better align with great power competition. In consultation with our allies, we will continue to refine and enhance our moves in line with our five key principles: Number one, enhance deterrence of Russia. Number two, strengthen NATO. Number three, reassure allies. Number four, improve U.S. strategic flexibility and European Command operational flexibility. And number five, take care of our Service members and their families in the process.” https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/commentary/transcript/transcript-strengthening-us-alliances-and-partnerships-with-us-secretary-of-defense-mark-esper/ Trump understood that Russia was becoming a bigger threat. Under Trump, DOD increased defense spending, made NATO countries co tribute more if their GDP to NATO, and began restructuring troops in Europe to be more Eastern Bloc focused. Anyone can look at what actually happened with NATO and understand that an UN referenced quote taken out of context suggesting Trump wanted to disband NATO is utterly ridiculous.
