Gut leads me to predict a no move majority vote. To be sure, that would be hugely embarrassing. But a speech about the need to pause, look at the data, admit “mistakes”, get things right, proceed carefully, promote diversity, and the like will do the trick!
It really won’t. Have you seen those gerrymandered pro-McKinley maps? Without the moves, redrawing boundaries will be a total nightmare.
Redrawing boundaries will be a nightmare no matter what. Most schools will be affected. They've said as much. Even the "most of McK goes to Reed" seems like they're playing down the fact that while "most" may go, that could mean 50% plus one. The Tuckahoe units there will move to McK, which starts the dominos.
Of course most schools will be affected either way. The difference is that if the moves happen, the effects will be due to Reed, ASFS, and Key getting new and largely walkable attendance zones, and then evening out remaining capacity and tightening up boundaries for other schools. But without the moves, a lot of kids in Virginia Square and Ballston will have to be bused to Ashlawn and McKinley, many kids in Rosslyn will get bused to Long Branch, and the School Board will have its hands full rebalancing capacity with little to no ability to address other factors like demographics.
