I would go and if the first night is horrible drive home early :) It is doable IMO ..
How do you make it work with one bed (queen, if we are lucky), two adults, and two pre teens???? And no room for an air mattress to lay on the floor and not at a very obvious angle? PP refuses to answer this, curiously. MIL is that you??!! :D
OP said a preschooler and a baby, so that's what I was responding to. Agree if it was 2 pre-teens it would be different.
Okay, just checking to make sure not everyone was "out there in left field" like MIL :) I think if you ask people to join you; or assume they are going to join you; or announce to them the date of vacation rental, with the expectation that they join you (did I cover everything for the obtuse IL's?) then you at least owe them a comfortable place to sleep that is NOT the floor. We own a beach house and would NEVER, EVER, EVER (YES, NEVER) ask someone to join us with any expectation that they would sleep on any floor. Ever. Is this so outrageous to some people? Is beach house synonymous with camping to some? There is no question in my mind, each and every occupant of the house should be treated with common kindness, dignity and respect. If not, have the balls to tell them that you would rather they not attend. Is it so difficult?
