I cannot believe this stupid thread has reached 8 pages! And yes, I know I am contributing to it, but I can’t look away!
The fact it's made it this far proves the OP's original point that people get super upset for inexplicable reasons about people not using microwaves. I think it's because microwaves carry a surprising amount of culture baggage. In the 70s and 80s they were seen as exciting upscale kitchen of the future tools, but by the 90s became synonmous with lazy, unhealthy food cooked by parents who don't care. Neither is particularly true, but I think people have a lot of hangups about cooking and what their level of skill says about them as a person. The OP didn't say anythign about any of that, but there's a broader cultural implication that people who stay at home and make their poptarts from scratch and stir their risotto for hours are more caring or loving. It's not true, but I think people get their hackles up when someone talks about not using a microwave, because a lot of people have insecurities about their own reliance and what it might say — or in their imagination what society thinks it says—about their level of care. They're not slobs, or morons or bad parents, they just don't know how to cook, and so what if the use a microwave. At the same time, people who worry that someone else doesn't have a microwave should get a life. Can we move on to talking about why Keurigs are stupid? That won't cause a major meltdown!
I don’t see this playing out at all. OP just put out a bad premise and when people corrected it, the OP tried to rebut every point and that annoyed people. Don’t start a “discussion” if you have no desire to entertain o ideas other than your own. I don’t know anyone sensitive about using a microwave. It’s a tool in your kitchen and you use it as you need it. It’s also not as hard to use as OP claims.
The only premise the OP put out was "i don't use one and it's fine, but people get upset about it" then the OP asked what people use their microwave for... and a bunch of people immediately got very upset. So, actually, it did play out.
Re-read the OP
I'm the OP. I said that there are really only a handful of things that a microwave is really much better at reheating. Based on the sincere, non-troll answers, that seems to be the case. Then I said I don't really need one. Then I asked people what they use their microwave for. What's the problem with the "premise" especially considering that most of the sincere people in this thread were like "I just use mine for melting butter or heating veggies". I stand by my contention it doesn't take long to make popcorn on the stovetop.
“You can definitely heat things very well in a microwave, but it usually requires at least as much care (figuring out the proper time and setting) as it does figuring out how to do it on the stovetop or oven. “ This is not correct. Additionally, the purpose of a microwave is also to cook faster, not better, so your op is incorrect there as well. Many have pointed out items that are ideally suited to microwave cooking in that you don’t sacrifice texture or taste. These are smart uses for a microwave, but you can also heat or reheat pretty much anything. Other benefits, such as fewer dishes and more straightforward prep have been pointed out as well.
