Mine was broken from 2013 to 2022. Never missed it. I have one now (replaced because I caught one on a crazy sale) but I mostly use it to melt butter when I am baking or to reheat my coffee.

The fact it's made it this far proves the OP's original point that people get super upset for inexplicable reasons about people not using microwaves.

I think it's because microwaves carry a surprising amount of culture baggage.

In the 70s and 80s they were seen as exciting upscale kitchen of the future tools, but by the 90s became synonmous with lazy, unhealthy food cooked by parents who don't care.

Neither is particularly true, but I think people have a lot of hangups about cooking and what their level of skill says about them as a person. The OP didn't say anythign about any of that, but there's a broader cultural implication that people who stay at home and make their poptarts from scratch and stir their risotto for hours are more caring or loving.

It's not true, but I think people get their hackles up when someone talks about not using a microwave, because a lot of people have insecurities about their own reliance and what it might say — or in their imagination what society thinks it says—about their level of care. They're not slobs, or morons or bad parents, they just don't know how to cook, and so what if the use a microwave.

At the same time, people who worry that someone else doesn't have a microwave should get a life.

Can we move on to talking about why Keurigs are stupid? That won't cause a major meltdown!

I don’t see this playing out at all. OP just put out a bad premise and when people corrected it, the OP tried to rebut every point and that annoyed people. Don’t start a “discussion” if you have no desire to entertain o ideas other than your own.

I don’t know anyone sensitive about using a microwave. It’s a tool in your kitchen and you use it as you need it. It’s also not as hard to use as OP claims.

The only premise the OP put out was "i don't use one and it's fine, but people get upset about it" then the OP asked what people use their microwave for...

and a bunch of people immediately got very upset.

So, actually, it did play out.

Re-read the OP

I'm the OP. I said that there are really only a handful of things that a microwave is really much better at reheating. Based on the sincere, non-troll answers, that seems to be the case.

Then I said I don't really need one. Then I asked people what they use their microwave for.

What's the problem with the "premise" especially considering that most of the sincere people in this thread were like "I just use mine for melting butter or heating veggies".

I stand by my contention it doesn't take long to make popcorn on the stovetop.

“You can definitely heat things very well in a microwave, but it usually requires at least as much care (figuring out the proper time and setting) as it does figuring out how to do it on the stovetop or oven. “

This is not correct.

Additionally, the purpose of a microwave is also to cook faster, not better, so your op is incorrect there as well.

Many have pointed out items that are ideally suited to microwave cooking in that you don’t sacrifice texture or taste. These are smart uses for a microwave, but you can also heat or reheat pretty much anything.

Other benefits, such as fewer dishes and more straightforward prep have been pointed out as well.

I'm afraid that saying it doesn't make it so.

You seem to be TRYING to talk about the difference between cooking something from scratch and throwing some high sodium garbage in the microwave.

You can go to trader joe's and get a pre-made meal and heat it in the oven or the microwave. There is a reason they suggest the oven. It takes longer, but it's better.

Microwaves are good if you're in a hurry, but are a sacrifice in almost every other way.

Yes this all CAN be done without a microwave

You CAN cook minute rice in a microwave, but I would submit that's a lowpoint, not a highlight.

Also, it's garbage to say nuggets tenders and burritos are better in the microwave. They're faster, but they're definitively not better. That's why manufacturers almost laways list conventional oven or convection oven as the ideal method.

I mean, i had a friend growing up whose mother made "grilled cheese sandwiches" in the microwave. It's possible. You can make a hot sandwich wiht melted cheese in the middle but it ain't grilled cheese.

He was horrified when he got to college and saw a real grilled cheese and realized his mother had been screwing him out of this awesome thing for his whole life.

It's nonsense that a stove or oven are just as fast for leftovers. Those appliances take forever just to heat up.

If you were a food editor you would know it really doesn't take long to heat something up in a pan, and you would also know that microwaves are often quick, but are not consistent in how they heat.

I will reheat soup on the stove.

I'd be SUPER careful reheating rice. I don't FULLY understand the toxin thing, but I don't really want anything to do with reheated rice.

I guess I don’t either. I reheat rice in the microwave all the time as part of leftovers, and have for 20 years. Pretty sure every normal person reheats rice in the microwave. Whats the big deal?

Read about old rice and toxins. It can kill you. I never worried too much until I read about it and it’s a very real thing.

I would venture to say 99% people in the US reheat rice in the microwave as part of reheating a leftover dinner/lunch. It is not dangerous. This is is paranoia

A microwave is not any more or less dangerous to reheat rice in.

Rice, no matter how it's reheated, should be heated to 160 and not left for extended periods at room temperature. Get it hot or cool it quickly.

It's not paranoia, it's an actual thing.
