Would anyone in this thread be willing to share the names of (non big3) private schools they switched to? Like the OP, I'm on the fence about whether/when to switch. It would be somewhat of a financial strain, but of course we want a strong education.
We left for St. Anselms Abbey School (6-12), which is focused primarily on highly academically motivated boys who want a challenging environment. Until this year, they have administered not one but two entrance exams required of all applicants--OLSAT and SCAT-- and required essays as well as teacher recommendations and transcripts. It is a hike to NE DC, and there are logistical downsides, but it has been very good for our son, after a miserable experience at APS, which long ago stopped differentiating for curious and highly motivated students. Our children were begging us to leave. Being committed to public schools, we probably took too long to make that decision, but now that we have, while it is financially and logistically painful, it has been really worth it for our kids. We may be a small sample size, but it's the right fit for us.
