That’s crazy as she was an ENGLISH and ESOL teacher.

Yes, it says a lot about the state of education, at least at that school which did have such a storied history of success.

I’m most happy that the parents at my kid’s private aren’t insufferable twats.

We left for St. Anselms Abbey School (6-12), which is focused primarily on highly academically motivated boys who want a challenging environment. Until this year, they have administered not one but two entrance exams required of all applicants--OLSAT and SCAT-- and required essays as well as teacher recommendations and transcripts. It is a hike to NE DC, and there are logistical downsides, but it has been very good for our son, after a miserable experience at APS, which long ago stopped differentiating for curious and highly motivated students. Our children were begging us to leave. Being committed to public schools, we probably took too long to make that decision, but now that we have, while it is financially and logistically painful, it has been really worth it for our kids. We may be a small sample size, but it's the right fit for us.

St Stephens/St Agnes is an Episcopal day school (religion light). It has buses but not sure of routes. Congressional is a good secular K-8 located near 7-corners, also with bus options.

There also are Catholic parochial options in and near Arlington. And there are some academically reasonable (e.g., trach evolution the same way APS does) evangelical Christian schools outside Arlington limits but nearby.

Some schools (e.g., Landon, Holton) in MD have daily bus routes serving McLean and N Arlington. I would not recommend any school across the river - purely for logistics reasons.

There's an entire thread over on the private school forum. The problem is it very much depends on where in Arlington you live.

I would love suggestions too. Arlington is not super convenient to many privates unfortunately.
