I don't think it's inconceivable that Biden, if he has a disastrous performance during the debate, could be replaced during the convention--especially if it is clearly age-related.
I am not sure why anyone thinks he would have a disasterous performance. He is old, but not senile nor demented. Everyone keeps lowering the bar and then Biden exceeds expectations. For me, I would rather be where the Dems are than the GOP. Trump is a loose cannon.
Fewer people are taking this statement seriously. There is something not entirely right with Biden. You cannot spin your way out of it without seeming like a Soviet style party mouthpiece. It doesn't mean Biden is heading for the dementia wing tomorrow, but everything about him, his movements, his slurry speaking at times, his jarring behavior contrasting with other world leaders at these get togethers, the rather childish guiding of him in and out of events, points to some type of *something* going on. Nonetheless, there's enough we've seen and heard, over and over again, across the last six months to have a genuinely frank discussion about his physical and mental capabilities to stand for president for the next four years. Regardless of your opinions, it remains that Biden has done *nothing* to counter and dispel these growing perceptions of him because he still refuses to freely engage with the public outside of extremely heavily scripted and regulated events. The more honest partisans I've seen on this forum frankly acknowledge it but also say it doesn't matter as long as he's just a figurehead while trustworthy aides and perhaps even Obama are really running the show behind the scenes. That is a form of honesty.
Dp... What are you going to do with yourself if Biden does well in the debate (and he very likely will) Make a bunch of wild claims, like that he's on magic performance enhancing drugs that cancel out dementia? If such drugs existed, it would be a gamechanger. Or are you going to claim someone is feeding him the answers via secret earpiece? If you actually ever worked with people who have dementia you'd know that wouldn't work, it would only get them even more confused and disoriented. Or are you going to push even stupider theories like maybe it's a robot replica at the debate or alien reptilian shapeshifter... What will you do if Trump stumbles, gives stupid answers, rambles off topic and can't control himself (as constantly happens at his rallies)...
DP. The difference is everyone expects mayhem, gross stupidity, and awful manners from Trump. I can recall watching his prior debates with Biden and Clinton and thinking there is no chance there's a single human being left in America who thinks it's a good idea to elect this man president. And yet they did. And there were even more voters last time - even after four years of Trump chaos. The thing to remember is that for most people Trump is just a vehicle to express a giant middle finger to the "establishment." That's the appeal. The more ludicrous he is, the better. Whereas Biden was meant to be the calm, sane, and rational antidote. The country needed a middle of the road experienced politician as a temporary placeholder. Which is why people voted for him. He is none of those things now. As everyone can see, he is rapidly deteriorating. Not his fault. Aging happens. If his mind was still nimble, he would have known that absolutely no American wants an 86 year old president. He is the establishment. And the establishment is feeble and dying. There is no natural base of Biden voters. And there never has been. Witness all his failed presidential bids until Obama pulled him from irrelevancy. Biden's physical and mental health are everything. It's the only reason people vote for him in the age of Trump. The fact that Democrats nominated a weak geriatric that belongs in a nursing home as their answer to the massive amount of Americans that are upset with the establishment is absolutely breathtaking. Everyone at the DNC and the White House needs to be fired for their idiocy. I guarantee Trump is going to win over the Weekend at Bernies candidate.
