The powers that be will have Trump win this time, so no need to replace Biden.

But if the plan was for a Democrat to win, they would replace Biden at the convention.

As Democrats, we should have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, protecting Gavin Newsom of Michelle Obama from debates and primaries makes sense if the goal is beating Trump. On the other hand, it’s undemocratic to disenfranchise Democratic primary voters and do everything via backroom deal.

Polling does not show a better candidate against Trump.

So you are suggesting the Dems somehow replace Biden with...?

A progressive? Turning off the middle and Indepdents?
A middle of the road? turning off progressives?
What happens with Harris? You can't just name a different candidate and shove her aside or ignore her.

Michelle O, H Clinton, or Gavin Newsom would all take Biden to church. I'm a Republican. I hope you keep him on the ballot. But if you believe the polls at all, Biden is severely under water and I don't believe that the DNC is just refreshing the talking points-- I might disagree with them, but they aren't dumb.

Michelle is it.
Where is she these days anyway?

Oh yes
Republicans want Hilary on the ballot.
Because of course they do.

I am not sure why anyone thinks he would have a disasterous performance. He is old, but not senile nor demented.

Everyone keeps lowering the bar and then Biden exceeds expectations. For me, I would rather be where the Dems are than the GOP.

Trump is a loose cannon.

Biden slurs his words and can't keep names of presidents or countries straight. He spins yarns-- that is being generous-- that he was a truck driver, that Hunter was a DA, and just recently he said he was a law professor at UPenn after being VP. Ukraine becomes Mexico or Iraq, and he isn't sure which country is on our southern border. He falls down and freezes. He wears moon boots to avoid falls. Even his dogs know that he is intensely frail, and attack anyone who comes near him. Please stop telling us not to believe our lying eyes.

Fewer people are taking this statement seriously. There is something not entirely right with Biden. You cannot spin your way out of it without seeming like a Soviet style party mouthpiece. It doesn't mean Biden is heading for the dementia wing tomorrow, but everything about him, his movements, his slurry speaking at times, his jarring behavior contrasting with other world leaders at these get togethers, the rather childish guiding of him in and out of events, points to some type of *something* going on. Nonetheless, there's enough we've seen and heard, over and over again, across the last six months to have a genuinely frank discussion about his physical and mental capabilities to stand for president for the next four years. Regardless of your opinions, it remains that Biden has done *nothing* to counter and dispel these growing perceptions of him because he still refuses to freely engage with the public outside of extremely heavily scripted and regulated events.

The more honest partisans I've seen on this forum frankly acknowledge it but also say it doesn't matter as long as he's just a figurehead while trustworthy aides and perhaps even Obama are really running the show behind the scenes. That is a form of honesty.

Dp... What are you going to do with yourself if Biden does well in the debate (and he very likely will)

Make a bunch of wild claims, like that he's on magic performance enhancing drugs that cancel out dementia? If such drugs existed, it would be a gamechanger.

Or are you going to claim someone is feeding him the answers via secret earpiece? If you actually ever worked with people who have dementia you'd know that wouldn't work, it would only get them even more confused and disoriented.

Or are you going to push even stupider theories like maybe it's a robot replica at the debate or alien reptilian shapeshifter...

What will you do if Trump stumbles, gives stupid answers, rambles off topic and can't control himself (as constantly happens at his rallies)...

DP. The difference is everyone expects mayhem, gross stupidity, and awful manners from Trump. I can recall watching his prior debates with Biden and Clinton and thinking there is no chance there's a single human being left in America who thinks it's a good idea to elect this man president. And yet they did. And there were even more voters last time - even after four years of Trump chaos.

The thing to remember is that for most people Trump is just a vehicle to express a giant middle finger to the "establishment." That's the appeal. The more ludicrous he is, the better.

Whereas Biden was meant to be the calm, sane, and rational antidote. The country needed a middle of the road experienced politician as a temporary placeholder. Which is why people voted for him.

He is none of those things now. As everyone can see, he is rapidly deteriorating. Not his fault. Aging happens. If his mind was still nimble, he would have known that absolutely no American wants an 86 year old president. He is the establishment. And the establishment is feeble and dying. There is no natural base of Biden voters. And there never has been. Witness all his failed presidential bids until Obama pulled him from irrelevancy.

Biden's physical and mental health are everything. It's the only reason people vote for him in the age of Trump. The fact that Democrats nominated a weak geriatric that belongs in a nursing home as their answer to the massive amount of Americans that are upset with the establishment is absolutely breathtaking. Everyone at the DNC and the White House needs to be fired for their idiocy. I guarantee Trump is going to win over the Weekend at Bernies candidate.

Why is it somehow fine to consider chaos, inability to walk down a ramp or pick up a glass of water like a normal healthy human, going on incoherent minutes-long rants from Trump as "expected" and perfectly acceptable and nobody should get fired and he is absolutely great to be our next President and deserves to win and be in charge for 4 years... but if Biden's lifelong stutter pops up for a few seconds, or he appears a little stiff because of his arthritis you feel the need to write inane paragraphs like you just did? Do you not see the utter incongruity and hypocrisy in what you're saying?

No pp, they are either trolls or people who are so far gone down the cult of Trump that they can't see straight.

Let's compare notes after the 6/27 debate, assuming Trump actually shows up for it.

Why wait until then? He's falling down all over the place, blowing up at a reporters constantly and slurs his speech like Nancy Pelosi at happy hour. What are we waiting fore?

Nancy Pelosi doesn't drink, but good try.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't show up. But in the meanwhile, he's laying the groundwork for justifying what he knows will be a poor performance.
He has already cast doubt on whether CNN and its moderators will be "fair," and his minions are out there suggesting that if Biden does well, it's because he's on drugs.

What do you think are the odds he doesn't show? Would you put it at 50/50 at this point?

Who knows. The one thing I know for sure is that he will never accept defeat or responsibility for anything. If he doesn't show up, he'll spin it to make it seem like it's the other side's fault. If he does show up and doesn't do well, again, it's the other side's fault.

+1. This is how it will go and his supporters will lap it up. Trump knows he should not show for this debate.

That's his appeal!

Trump is mercurial. That means other countries do not screw with him.

Unlike Joe, a known quantity who will sell out the USA every chance he gets.

Saudi Arabia is only the first to jettison the petrodollar.
