The main issue is the long term potential threat to our own boarders if some other superpower decided to roll over the rest of the world and we ignored it. The shorter term threat is to our economy, as we would not have markets for our companies to sell into, because said other superpowers would have their own resources and ability to "provide" for their people at the expense of ours. As such, our economy would shrink, people would be out of work etc. So it doesn't matter what natural resources we have if we cannot have a viable economy. the days of being insular are long passed, and if we try to revert back, the shock to our economic and political system would be devastating.[/quote]
