You and I must be the only middle aged women posting this morning - otherwise I cannot believe that nobody is acknowledging what terrific husbands/fathers they were.

And yes John Boy definitely matured into somebody who would have my attention as well.

I would have seconded Atticus Finch on his fatherly love alone, but the question was about husbands and we don’t really know if he was a good one, we just assume.

Of course this question made me laugh a little because, having recently rewatched all of The Waltons and LHOTP with an elderly woman I was caregiver for, I realized it was the standards I had in mind from observing those two husbands/fathers in my childhood that kept me perpetually single.

And ironically reading Pioneer Girl in recent years I learned that it is well documented that Charles Ingalls was a terrible husband and father, not anything like the man his daughter depicted decades later in her children’s books.

Who knows about Earl Hamner Sr., his son closely protected the family legacy underpinning his lucrative Waltons franchise and it doesn’t seem any historians have done a deep dive into the family history to see what if any skeletons reside there. But I can only assume he was far less perfect in real life  than he is portrayed in the books and series.[/quote]
