People are nuts if they don't think there aren't tons of confederate flags in MD. My SIL has a beautiful home on the water on Cobb Island. I was there taking in the view of it along with the confederate flags. I'm sure this isn't the case in PG and Montgomery counties. Just like it isn't in Fairfax, alexandria, arlington and even prince william. You have to get pretty far out in VA to start seeing those flags. Rural VA and MD have a lot in common.
The whole point of the ugly Maryland flag (which I actually love btw) looking the way that it does is that the state is half-Union half-Confederate, as far as allegiances of the people go anyway. This dynamic still very much exists.
DP - I also love the Maryland flag. And, yes, rural MD is very red, as is rural VA. One of the big differences (to me) is the overall proportions in the states - Maryland is much more balanced geographically and far more blue when it comes to population. Virginia has very blue areas in NoVA, balanced out by how large the rest of the state is. It ends up being purple because of the population disparities in NoVA vs. the rest of the state. So, you wouldn’t see someone like Youngkin elected in Maryland, where he was in Virginia. That stuff does end up mattering, at least to me.
