You people are absolutely ridiculous. Point being, why didn't they tell people there what was happening? COMMUNICATION. Silly me, when you hear gun shots, and you don't know if they are in or out of the stadium, you'd like to know! "Drive by involving two cars outside the park. Remain calm, remain in place, and we will keep you informed." Easy. But no, they had to freak everyone out by corralling the players and ignoring the fans - half of whom were leaving DURING the shooting (Nats were down by 3 at the top of the 6th) - the other half were either screaming or hiding under their seats. If that is entertaining to you, I wish this situation on you and your family, see how you like it. If we have to be subjected to this crap, regardless of politics (take it to the politics board) - then at least know how to handle a crises involving tens of thousands of people in your ball park. I will be seeing baseball in other cities from now on. If nothing else, your PR team and damage control sucks.
Who said it’s entertaining? They made an announcement after five minutes. What exactly are you expecting?
It was not five minutes, certainly not to people hidden under the seats.
I was there, and I’m calling BS on the “five minutes” thing. We hard the noise, the players were rounded up and went into the dugout, we sat and discussed whether it might be a rain delay, I looked up and saw people across the park running, discussed the fact with the people around us that that really sounded like gunfire, we walked up the stairs (slowly, because there were people in front of us, so that alone took a few minutes), got to the concourse, stood there and discussed what to do, saw the gate attendants, who were energetically waving us outside, went outside, ran across the street and into a restaurant. They had the game on tv, and we had been there a while when they asked everyone to stay in the stadium. If you look at the video, the stadium was mostly empty at that point. I was well aware at the time that, with zero knowledge of what was happening, there was no “right” answer. It was all luck. We could be running straight into the gunfire. I did know that staying out in the open in a stadium was a really bad idea. Someone with a rifle and a scope could start picking people off easily. I’d take my chances in the concourse where there was some cover. Remember the Las Vegas concert? We left there because stadium personnel told us to. I don’t necessarily blame the Nats, but I am surprised that they didn’t react more quickly. They have security with radios everywhere. They were able to relay the message to get the players off the field. They clearly weren’t prepared to tell the fans what is happening. This is something they should have been prepared for and drill with their workers. My workplace does — we are prepared for “shelter in place” or “evacuate.”
+1 YES! Other PP here. There is no excuse for the workers to have not been trained at all, and to basically not GAF, and make it so obvious they just don't GAF. I have been to concerts at Nats Stadium, with a line well AROUND the building, with the ticket takers allowing no more in than ONE at a time, while the concert ($$$$) starts. Zero. Effs. Given. About the fans. There needs to be better training, these people aren't doing fans/customers any favors.
