This is OP. Yes, we teach our kids that other kids, just like them, want to know more and ask questions. Where are you from is the best example. They can get into it, or they can just tell them where we lived before here. That wasn't the worry for us, when I started this thread, because I think curiosity is different from hate or prejudice. I had explained what had happened in our last school, but it got deleted I think. A kid called my son a slur for black people, told him to go back to Africa, etc. My son called him an idiot and told him he wasn't from Africa. I was called to the asst. principal's office with my son, to apologize to the kid for calling him an idiot. I said no; he needs to apologize for hate speech. Asst. Principal said the kid wasn't serious, plus your son isn't even black, so what's the big deal? I don't want a sequel to that movie - it was infuriating. That's why my husband is all up in arms, wanting to have a lawyer on speed dial, etc. so he can feel prepared to deal with that kind of garbage. But it sounds to me like these kind of blatant aggression and ignorance are not very likely to happen here? Even though a lot of the recent anti-Asian assaults have occurred in "liberal" cities...what's the difference? Is it because people here are more educated?
