Share the video with your kids as well if they are old enough or mature enough. These are among the few incidents that were reported because so many go unreported. Racism against Asian Americans (both explicit and implicit) in the region is very real. Anyone who denies it has no clue what racism is. Read any of the DCUM threads dealing with Asians and there are so many ignorant and racist tropes posited by people whose grandparents were probably on the wrong side of the Civil Rights Movement and who will call me racist for saying something about their family that is undeniably highly probabilistic.

Jeremy Lin was a former Northern California high school player of the year who led his team to a state championship yet received zero scholarship offers from Division 1 schools. He then excelled at Harvard and went undrafted in the NBA draft. Linsanity went on to have several solid years in the NBA. BTW OP, short answer to racism in Northern Virginia: Yes our kids were name called, given the slant eye, and physically assaulted many times; And yes, white teachers or staff forced these racist kids to "apologize" to my kids and my kids then were coerced into shaking hands with these racist kids as if nothing serious had occurred and now they should all be friends (I think the disciplinary punishment was either the apology or the hand shake but I'm not sure which); Black and brown counselors regularly told my kids that it was their fault for being in the path of kids who were having a bad day and next time they should know better and move away from them (many of these kids were in the same classroom); White and brown admin without fail would notify me of an "incident" involving one or more of my kids but neglect to describe the racist part of the assault and would do an "Oh yeah" when I would remind them of it in a follow up call or visit. Rinse and repeat for years because to non-Asians in the area, racism against Asians doesn't exist—and even if it does, it's not that bad. If your kids are incapable of telling you the whole story either because of shame or youthful ignorance, then some significant parts may have been deliberately left out by their academic caretakers.

There is a lot of curiosity that hurts feelings like “why are your eyes shaped like that” or “your skin is weird”. There are a lot of kids who don’t know the different Asian countries and call people “Chinesey”. There are kids that think my kids eat dogs and cats. There are kids that think Asians aren’t real Americans.

I agree that this is still a huge issue, but honestly is that happening much in Fairfax? I can't picture how someone could live and work in this community and not know that not all Asian people are Chinese. I mean how dense would these people have to be to be literally surrounded by the food and people in our community and not just absorb that knowledge. SMH at how dumb some people must be

There was never any national outrage when Daniel Holtsclaw and Peter Liang were out here committed racial violence.
Asians are being assaulted, but in these high crime areas were this is happening, so are the other races of people who inhabit the same areas.

You seem to be denying Asians any sense of agency. Try not to be such a predictable ideologue and please stop minimizing anti-Asian assaults.

This is OP. Yes, we teach our kids that other kids, just like them, want to know more and ask questions. Where are you from is the best example. They can get into it, or they can just tell them where we lived before here. That wasn't the worry for us, when I started this thread, because I think curiosity is different from hate or prejudice. I had explained what had happened in our last school, but it got deleted I think. A kid called my son a slur for black people, told him to go back to Africa, etc. My son called him an idiot and told him he wasn't from Africa. I was called to the asst. principal's office with my son, to apologize to the kid for calling him an idiot. I said no; he needs to apologize for hate speech. Asst. Principal said the kid wasn't serious, plus your son isn't even black, so what's the big deal? I don't want a sequel to that movie - it was infuriating. That's why my husband is all up in arms, wanting to have a lawyer on speed dial, etc. so he can feel prepared to deal with that kind of garbage.

Just don't create a bullying situation, OP. Don't have your kids be supersensitive to everything. "Where are you from?" Tell your friends where you moved from. Prtetty simple question, pretty simple answer.

We're very blessed to be in this diverse area. I feel that my kids are completely safe in their school as I know that their counselors, teachers and principal would never allow such behavior. Even if something happened, I know that the school would be proactive in making things right.
When DD was bullied in elementary school we found the school to be a great support. I'm sure they would continue the same kind of support.
